Split Bill Calculator
Split a bill with tip and tax evenly between people.
Quick answer
- Grand total = bill + tax + tip, with both tax and tip calculated on the entered (pre-tax) bill amount.
- Per person = grand total ÷ people: a $100 bill with a 15% tip split two ways is $115 in total, $57.50 each.
- Set the tip or tax percentage to 0 to leave that item out of the split.
- Worked example — Grand total: $115.00 (full example below).
Split Bill Calculator
| Grand total | $115.00 |
| Tip amount | $15.00 |
| Tax amount | $0.00 |
| Per person | $57.50 |
| Tip per person | $7.50 |
A $100 bill with a 15% tip split two ways: $115 total, $57.50 each, of which $7.50 each is tip.
Enter the bill, an optional tip and tax percentage, and the number of people. The calculator returns the grand total and exactly what each person owes, including their share of the tip.
Tip and tax are both calculated on the entered bill amount (the pre-tax subtotal), which is the common convention for tipping. Set either percentage to 0 to leave it out.

Common mistakes
- Splitting the tax unevenly — charging some people tax on their items and others none, or splitting the bill evenly but the tax by item — so the shares no longer add up to the grand total. Split one combined grand total instead.
- Rounding each person's share down to a whole dollar so the money collected falls short of the grand total; round up, or have one person cover the few cents of difference.
- Mixing tip conventions — some people tipping on the pre-tax amount and others on the post-tax total. Agree on one base first; on a $100 bill with 8% tax, the difference on a 15% tip is $1.20.
- Forgetting that the per-person figure must include each person's share of tip and tax, not just their share of the food and drink.
Frequently asked questions
Should tip be on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Traditionally pre-tax, which is what this calculator does. Tipping on the post-tax total only adds a small amount — on a $100 bill with 8% tax, the difference on a 15% tip is $1.20.
What if people ordered very different amounts?
An even split is fairest for shared meals of similar size. For very uneven orders, split the itemized amounts individually and use this calculator just for each person's tip and tax share.
