Average Calculator
Mean of a list of numbers, with the sum and count shown.
Quick answer
- Formula: Average = Sum of all values ÷ Count of values
- Worked example — Average (mean): 25.00 (full example below).
Average Calculator
| Average (mean) | 25.00 |
| Sum | 100.00 |
| Count | 4 |
The numbers 10, 20, 30 and 40 add up to 100, and 100 ÷ 4 = 25, so the average is 25.
The average (arithmetic mean) is found by adding all the values together and dividing by how many there are. It is the most common single-number summary of a set of data.
Type your numbers separated by commas — test scores, prices, temperatures, anything — and the calculator returns the mean along with the total sum and the count, so you can check the arithmetic yourself.
The formula
Worked example
The numbers 10, 20, 30 and 40 add up to 100, and 100 ÷ 4 = 25, so the average is 25.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the average and the median?
The average (mean) uses every value; the median is just the middle value when sorted. One very large value pulls the mean up but barely moves the median. Use the Mean, Median & Mode calculator to compare them.
Can I average percentages?
You can average them arithmetically, but be careful: percentages based on different group sizes should usually be weighted. Averaging a 50% score on 10 questions with 90% on 100 questions does not give the true overall score.
