Fraction Calculator
Simplify a fraction and see it as a mixed number, decimal and percentage.
Quick answer
- Formula: Simplified = (Numerator ÷ GCD) / (Denominator ÷ GCD)
- Worked example — Simplified fraction: 3/4 (full example below).

6/8 simplifies to 3/4, because both numbers divide by their GCD of 2. As a decimal that is 0.75, or 75%.
Simplifying a fraction means dividing the top (numerator) and bottom (denominator) by their greatest common divisor so the fraction is written in its smallest whole-number terms — 6/8 becomes 3/4.
Enter any numerator and denominator. Alongside the simplified fraction you get the mixed number (for improper fractions like 7/3, which becomes 2 1/3), the decimal value and the equivalent percentage.

Frequently asked questions
What is an improper fraction?
A fraction where the numerator is larger than the denominator, such as 7/3. It can be rewritten as a mixed number — 7/3 is 2 1/3 — which is often easier to picture.
How do I turn a fraction into a decimal?
Divide the numerator by the denominator. 3/4 is 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. Some fractions repeat forever, like 1/3 = 0.333…, and are shown rounded to 4 decimal places here.
Why simplify fractions at all?
Simplest terms are easier to compare, add and communicate. Saying a recipe needs 3/4 cup is clearer than 6/8 cup, even though they are the same amount.
