Momentum Calculator

Linear momentum p = mv, with kinetic energy shown alongside.

Quick answer

  • Formula: p = m × v; KE = ½ × m × v²
  • Worked example — Momentum: 6.0000 kg·m/s (full example below).

A 2 kg object at 3 m/s has momentum 6 kg·m/s and kinetic energy 9 J.

Diagram: how the Momentum Calculator works — you enter Mass, Velocity; it applies the formula p = m × v; KE = ½ × m × v²; and the worked example gives Momentum: 6.0000 kg·m/s.
How the Momentum Calculator works — the inputs, the formula, and a worked example (Momentum: 6.0000 kg·m/s).

Momentum measures how much motion an object carries: mass times velocity. Unlike kinetic energy, momentum is a vector and is conserved in collisions, which makes it central to collision analysis.

Enter mass and velocity to get momentum in kg·m/s, plus the object's kinetic energy as a bonus so you can compare the two quantities directly.

The formula

p = m × v; KE = ½ × m × v²

Worked example

Worked example for the Momentum Calculator: with Mass 2, Velocity 3, the result is Momentum: 6.0000 kg·m/s; Kinetic energy (bonus): 9.0000 J.

Frequently asked questions

How do momentum and kinetic energy differ?

Momentum grows in direct proportion to velocity (p = mv), while kinetic energy grows with velocity squared. In a perfectly elastic collision both are conserved; in an inelastic collision only momentum is.

What is impulse?

Impulse is force × time, and it equals the change in momentum. It is why airbags and crumple zones help: they stretch the stopping time, reducing the force for the same momentum change.
