Annuity Calculator

Future and present value of a series of equal payments.

Quick answer

  • Formula: FV = C · ((1+i)^n − 1)/i; PV = C · (1 − (1+i)^−n)/i, where i = rate per period
  • Worked example — Future value: $1,268.25 (full example below).

Worked example result
Future value$1,268.25
Present value$1,125.51
Total payments made$1,200.00
Interest component of FV$68.25

Paying $100 monthly for a year at 12% accumulates to $1,268.25 — $68.25 of interest on $1,200 paid in.

Diagram: how the Annuity Calculator works — you enter Payment per period, Annual interest rate, Payments per year, Years, Payment timing; it applies the formula FV = C · ((1+i)^n − 1)/i; PV = C · (1 − (1+i)^−n)/i, where i = rate…; and the worked example gives Future value: $1,268.25.
How the Annuity Calculator works — the inputs, the formula, and a worked example (Future value: $1,268.25).

An annuity is a series of equal payments at regular intervals — pension payouts, insurance settlements, lottery installments or systematic deposits.

This calculator gives both the future value of the payment stream and its present value, for payments at the end of each period (ordinary annuity) or the start (annuity due).

The formula

FV = C · ((1+i)^n − 1)/i; PV = C · (1 − (1+i)^−n)/i, where i = rate per period

Worked example

Paying $100 monthly for a year at 12% accumulates to $1,268.25 — $68.25 of interest on $1,200 paid in.

Worked example for the Annuity Calculator: with Payment per period 100, Annual interest rate 12, Payments per year 12 (monthly), the result is Future value: $1,268.25; Present value: $1,125.51.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an ordinary annuity and an annuity due?

Timing. Ordinary annuity payments arrive at the end of each period; annuity-due payments at the start, so each payment earns one extra period of interest.

How do I value a pension or settlement offer?

Use the present value result: it is the lump sum today that is financially equivalent to the payment stream at the rate you enter.
