How the Ideal Weight Calculator works — the inputs, the formula, and a worked example (Ideal weight (Devine): 75.0 kg).

The Devine formula (1974), originally developed for drug dosing, estimates ideal body weight from height: 50 kg for a man (45.5 kg for a woman) at 5 feet tall, plus 2.3 kg for every additional inch. It remains widely used in clinical and nutrition settings as a quick reference weight.

Alongside the Devine figure, this calculator shows the weight range that corresponds to a BMI of 18.5–24.9 at your height — for most people the broader, more useful target. Both are estimates for general information, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Should I aim exactly for the Devine weight?

No — it is a single reference point that ignores frame size and muscle mass. Anywhere inside the healthy BMI range is a reasonable target for most adults; very muscular people may sit healthily above it.

Why do other formulas (Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) give different numbers?

Each was fitted to different populations and purposes. For a 180 cm man they cluster within a few kilograms of each other — Devine sits in the middle and is the most commonly cited.
